What Face Shape Are You?

You look in the mirror every day, but do you know what facial shape you have? It’s totally fine if you don’t, not many people analyze their bone structure or the curvature of their face and come to a detailed conclusion about certain measurements. In order to get a good idea of your face shape, you are going to need a flexible tape measurer, like the kind used by a tailor. 

Measure the width of your forehead by placing the measuring tape across your face from the peak of one eyebrow arch to the peak of the opposite arch. Next, measure the length of your cheekbones by starting and ending at the pointiest part below the outer corner of each eye.

Now is your jawline. Measure from the tip of your chin to below your ear at the point at which your jaw angles upwards. Multiply that number by two to get your jawline measurement. Lastly, measure the length of your entire face, from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin. Once you’ve got the measurements, note which is the largest of the four, as this will be the giveaway. 

Oval

Your face length is greater than the width of the cheekbones, and your forehead is greater than the jawlines. The angle of the jaw is rounded rather than sharp. 

Square

All measurements are fairly similar. The angle of your jaw is sharp rather than rounded. 

Rectangle/Oblong

Your face length is the greatest measurement. Your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are all similar in size.

Round

Your cheekbones and face length have a similar measurement. They are larger than your forehead and jawline, which also have a similar measurement. The angle of your jaw is soft and much less defined. 

Diamond

Your face length measures the largest. Your cheekbones and forehead and measured in descending order, with the smallest measurement being your jawline. The chin is pointed. 

Heart

Your forehead measures greater than the cheekbones and jawline, and your chin is pointed.

Triangular

Your jawline measures greater than your cheekbones, which measures larger than your forehead. 

 

 

Haircuts for Oval Faces

Usually symmetrical and well-proportioned, the oval face shape does pretty much any hairstyle justice, so the choice is pretty much yours. There are, however, a couple of minor caveats to ensure that you take advantage of your ovalness. The trick is to wear your hair off the forehead to create some volume and angles on top. Keep it short on the sides and in the back, but keep it slightly longer on the top with a side-swept parting. Avoid a forward fringe, as it is too much heaviness on the forehead.

The square face shape is more or less characterized by a sharp jawline, even proportions, and an overall chiseled appearance. Buzz cuts, french crops, and quiffs all look good for square faces, as they are all relatively neat, all complimenting this specific facial shape. Think close fades, side partings, and short layers. 

Haircuts for Rectangle Faces

The longest of the face shapes requires a subtly tweaked hairstyle to ensure the face doesn’t appear longer than it is. Because a rectangular face looks longer, it is important to avoid taking the sides too short. A well-proportioned style doesn’t take the sides too short or leave too much length on top. Try a style that lets the hair fall to the sides and/or across the forehead to add width to your face. Be a little wary of a full beard, as they may elongate the face. Try facial hair that ranges in length from stubble to a short beard to fill out any gaps.

Hairstyles for Round Faces

Characterized by a rounded chin with no obvious definition, a round face shape benefits from a haircut that lends some definition. Since round faces don’t have much natural angle, create the illusion of structure with your hair. A style with height on the top that is taken tight on the sides, like a pompadour or a flat top, will add some structure. A full, square beard will also help thin the chin area, giving the appearance of a more chiseled jaw.

Haircuts for Diamond Faces

Narrow in the chin and brow with width in the cheeks, the diamond facial shape will look best with hairstyles that add width to the forehead and chin area. Fringes work well to do this, as do longer hairstyles, which can be tucked behind the ears to accentuate the bone structure. Avoid going too short on the slides, as that may make your ears look bigger than they are. Softer lines and layers can be great for this face shape, as they soften the natural angles.

Haircuts for Heart-Shaped Faces

 Wide at the temples and hairlines before gradually narrowing into a point at the chin, the heart-shaped face can benefit from hairstyles that make it look more proportioned. Avoid haircuts that are very tight, as these will accentuate the narrowness of the chin and the width of the forehead. Medium-length and long hairstyles that are kept light and then will soften the prominence of the forehead, and facial hair will add some bulk to the narrow chin. 

Haircuts for Triangle Faces

Narrow in the forehead and wide in the jawline, the triangle face requires a hairstyle that has volume. Longer, nose-length haircuts with fuller sides will add depth to the facial shape.
