Before we dive into some of the most common types of hair loss solutions, let’s first talk about hair loss. Hair loss is something that affects one in four men and though it’s thought of as a man’s problem, also affects a surprising number of women. Additionally, though most people believe that the loss of hair is only associated with genetics, there are many reasons for thinning hair. The possible reasons for hair loss in men are numerous; thinning or lost hair could be attributed to any of the following:
- Genetics
- Vitamin Deficiency
- Hyperthyroidism
- Alopecia Areata
- Hypotrichosis
- Medication
- Trichotillomania
- Stress
- Age
- Infection of the Scalp
As you can see, there are many different reasons for why a man might start to see a loss of his locks. Indeed, genetics play the largest role in the loss or retention of one’s own natural hair, but there are many other possibilities out there. As well as there being a variety of reasons for hair loss, also scientifically dubbed “Alopecia,” there are also different kinds of hair loss that people suffer. WebMD offers some great insight into the different types of alopecia.
- Involutional Alopecia – This is described as an overall thinning out of the hair on the head over time as hair follicles go into what is described as the “resting phase” and existing hairs become shorter and weaker.
- Androgenic Alopecia – In men, this kind of hair loss is commonly referred to as “male-pattern baldness.” It’s the receding of the hairline and thinning of the hair on the crown of the head. Male pattern baldness is being experienced by many men as early as in their late teens and early twenties.
- Alopecia Areata – This is a condition that affects children and young adults and may result in complete baldness, however, most people who suffer from this do regrow their hair within a few years.
- Alopecia Universalis – This condition rids the entire body of any hair, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair.
- Trichotillomania – As mentioned above, this is a psychological disorder in which a person pulls out their own hair.
- Telogen Effluvium – This kind of hair loss is characterized by large amounts of hair being in the resting phase at once. This form of hair loss is temporary.
- Scarring Alopecias – This is the permanent loss of hair due to inflammatory skin conditions such as cellulitis, folliculitis, and acne.
As you can see, the loss of one’s hair doesn’t have to be limited to genetics; there are all kinds of contributing factors for hair loss. If hair thinning or baldness is something that your clients have experienced, or are experiencing, the results can be devastating. And with so many treatments and solutions out there, it’s hard to know which direction to go in. Some hair loss treatments are accompanied with serious side-effects; some treatments work for a certain individual, but not another. How can a guy decide? Well, if he’s lucky, he’ll come across your salon and invest in this sleek, life-changing hair solution. But before we talk more about Hairskeen, let’s discuss some of the popular treatments for hair loss available today.
Minoxidil
While Minoxidil is the main ingredient in many brands, the products that contain it have been a popular solution to hair loss. Minoxidil was originally given to patients to treat high blood pressure and when some of these patients began noticing a regrowth of hair, minoxidil began being used in an effort to halt the loss of hair and regrow it. So what’s not to love? Well, as it turns out, quite a bit. When minoxidil has been effective, it has often taken months or even years for customers to see results. Additionally, this product only works as long as you’re using it. That means that you’re adding a $30-$60 monthly charge to your bills…for the rest of your life. If we added that up, using this product for twenty years could cost you up to $20,000. That’s a pretty expensive hair loss “solution.”
And did we mention that this product might not even work for your client? For this product that will cost thousands of dollars over time, it has some pretty sad success rates. Only about 16 percent of Minoxidil users have reported extremely successful results, 48 percent said that it was sufficiently effective, and 20 percent called it moderately effective, and an additional 16 percent of users found it to be completely ineffective. This means that only half of users believe that minoxidil worked wonders for their hair loss problem. So after spending an arm and a leg, investing one’s hopes and confidence in a product, and taking the time to apply or take it daily, half of men will get less-than-desired results.
And since we’re discussing the darker side of minoxidil, did you know that it can have disastrous side effects? Some people who’ve used minoxidil have reported experiencing itching, burning, and discomfort at the sight of application; still, others have seen a rapid growth of unwanted facial and body hair. Additionally, some users have experienced:
- Chest Pain
- Weight gain
- Dizziness and Confusion
- Fatigue
- Swelling of the Hands and Feet
- Difficulty Breathing
